Rebirth

10 Reasons why I had Quit Blogging

1. I thought I was too busy with other things.
2. I was always confused about what to write – should I make it a personal diary, or should I write something ‘literary’, or should it be about sports….
3. I thought I could never better some of my earlier posts – “so why even try”.
4. Since I hardly had readership outside my office, I thought “what was the point…”
5. Blogs are no longer ‘happening things’ – the whole world has one.
6. I made this stupid decision that I will first finish my BOOK and only then continue with blogging and stuff like that.
7. I had got too lazy.
8. I had got too lazy.
9. I had got too lazy.
10. I had got too lazy.

10 Reasons why I have decided to re-start Blogging

1. I have realized that I was never too busy to write something.
2. I have decided to have separate blogs for separate topics – that way I get to write more :)
3. I have realized that you never know until you try – so even if older posts are going to stay very good – I want to see if I can write anything better.
4. “Who Cares” – I have decided that I will write – if it is good, it will attract readership by itself.
5. Though it is no longer "happening" – I have realized that when I used to write, I used to have a sense of fulfillment, which I don’t have now – so even if the whole world has one – I want one.
6. I have realized that only when I’m regularly blogging am I able to write better. So maybe regularly blogging will help me complete my book after all.
7. I want to get rid of my laziness.
8. I want to get rid of my laziness.
9. I want to get rid of my laziness.
10. I want to get rid of my laziness.

Dreams Infinite.....

Only recently did I realize that there was nothing heavier to carry, than the burden of expectations. And this happened after ‘The Boss’ blog was published. Okay, I’m not comparing myself to a Sachin Tendulkar who carries on his already damaged back the expectations of a billion cricket crazy fanatics. But then a small set of readers who did read the blog, ended up asking the question “When are you posting the next one”. Trust me, when somebody asks this question the feeling is nothing short of ‘Ecstasy’. But what it also causes is ‘Fear’ – the fear of failing to meet the set expectations – the fear of failing to do something as good as the last one – the fear of being a total failure the next time around. This was definitely one of the reasons for the absolute absence of any activity on the blog. But after a hiatus of over two months, I should say better sense has prevailed and I have finally decided to see for myself, what more ramblings I could come up with.

Very recently I read an interesting write-up about somebody’s tryst with different professions and how his eventual career path turned out to be. Apart from being interesting, it got me to retrace my own path. To think about it, mine definitely has been the least conventional. In fact it has been a roller coaster of fantasies. I have always been an uncontrollable and unstoppable dreamer. And most times than not, my dreams have very closely flirted with Insanity.

It must have all started when I was around the age of 6. My mom, for the first time took me to a bank and the fascination was instant – loads of people came to the bank and gave all their money to one person sitting behind a counter. Now why would I want to do anything else when there was this great option right in front of me? Instantly I knew that I wanted to work in a Bank. Even today I vividly remember dreaming – “after a hard day’s work at the bank, I used to collect the few sacks of currency and carry them back home, to stock it in a large iron vault, that I had built in my palatial house”. Shortly later, I decided that the best thing to do was to become like my own Dad. He was into the Construction Business and I had often seen him distribute lots of cash to his employees every Saturday. Now that made a lot of sense; wasn’t the Man who gave away cash, richer than the man who collected them. So my dad was definitely richer than the man in the bank – after all, my Dad always gave money and never had to take any. So the next few years were filled with dreams of becoming a businessman - until a simple class test forced me to rethink my decision. There was a question that was asked in one of the class test – “What is your Father’s Profession?” That must have been the most difficult question I had ever faced in my life. Not because I didn’t know the answer to the question, but because I didn’t know the spelling of ‘BUSINESS’. After jotting down all possible options, I finally decided to go the easier route and wrote just 4 letters - “MICO”. I had a lot of classmates with fathers working in MICO and nobody suspected the validity of my answer. The teacher suspected no foul play and eventually I passed the test. That day I decided that I wouldn’t put my kids through the same struggle – not knowing how to spell your father’s profession was quite a problem indeed. So for some time after that, I dreamt of a possible adult life as an employee of MICO.

Towards my higher primary school, a huge renaissance in my approach took place. Thanks to all the physics lessons in school, I suddenly wanted to become a Scientist. I dreamt about my photograph appearing in all the Physics Text Books and children being taught about the inventions of this world famous Indian scientist. Then one friend did me a huge favour by letting out a great truth – “Sharath, they have already invented everything in this world, so how can you become a scientist now”? My life felt shattered. There didn’t seem to be any more purpose in my life. I remember the next few days of my life being all dark and gloomy.

They say kids become a lot more logical as they grow up – but in my case it was vice-versa. I reached high school with this huge dream of becoming a ‘Super-Hero’. Not the kind that wears their underwear over the pants!!! I was this smooth talking, smartly dressed, very polished, super hero who bashed up all the bad guys and always managed to save the ‘Damsel in Distress’. I had thought it all – I used to wear only suits – Drive around in a sleek Contessa Classic (guys, Contessa was the best we had a few years ago) - Had all the girls swooning over me – I carried a ‘Silver Revolver’ in my shoulder holster (you read it right, it was a ‘Silver Gun’) – and most importantly I had a written authorization from the President of India, to use my Gun wherever, whenever and against whoever I wanted (amidst all this insanity I had still been logical enough to think about getting a permission from the president). The superlative Inferiority complex that I carried throughout my early teens actually pulled me deeper into the realms of this fantasy. Most of my dreams could have become good Bollywood scripts - “One fine day, I get a distress call on my Car Radio Phone (Mobile phones were still unknown then, but my ‘Contessa’ had a custom made Radio that could get distress calls from the helpless). My own school had suddenly been attacked by hundreds of gun wielding militants. These long haired, bearded scums were holding the school and all the children to ransom. Their demand – “give Bangalore to Pakistan or they kill all the teachers and children”. Though I had very little sympathy for the teachers, being the Super Hero I was, I immediately rush to the school. The government is already contemplating on giving Bangalore away to Pakistan and I have very little time to do anything. But then after an hour of extreme action, involving – “being air dropped onto the school terrace, life threatening physical combat with the militants, some accurate gunfire and ultimately killing the kingpin” - I finally save the school, the kids, the teachers and Bangalore from being given to Pakistan. ‘Super Hero Sharath’ once again to the rescue”!!! This was one dream that was replayed a thousand times, each time a little more refined than the previous one.

College days began and ended more with Fiction thrillers, than Physics and Chemistry. Sidney Sheldon, James Hardley Chase, Jeffrey Archer and Robin cook provided enough inspiration to look beyond a life as a doctor or an Engineer. They also gave me enough confidence that my dreams were indeed realistic. After all if the heroes in their novels could do it, so could I. So each time I read a book, I wanted to be whatever the central character of that book did. I dreamt of become a ‘Hotelier’ (after reading ‘Kane and Abel’), a ‘Newspaper Baron’ (after reading the ‘Fourth Estate’), a ‘Construction Magnate’ (after reading ‘When the stars shine down’)..... Life and dreams revolved around these bestsellers.

My Engineering life brought in a very realistic approach into my life. The 18 to 20 hours of activity that went into each day took a huge toll. I no longer had time to fantasize. All I dreamt about was getting through the Campus Recruitment and being placed in a good company. However there used to be those rapid, short term dreams, each associated with a new recruiter coming to campus. When there was an announcement that a Pune based company was coming in for recruitment, the next few days were spent dreaming about a life in Pune. This way, even before facing a single Interview, I had already lived a couple of days each at, Daewoo Motors - New Delhi, Crompton Greaves – Nashik, Mahindra Motors – Pune, L& T – Mysore.....

My first professional job was a dream in itself; but one that I had not dreamt about. Much to the envy of the rest of the class, 3 of us got into the ‘World’s Number One Manufacturer of Robots & CNCs’. The pay was quite envious too. However this phase didn’t last long. Inspite of warnings from almost everyone I knew, I quit. My dreams were now of becoming an overnight Millionaire. Thus started an year and a half of hysterically maddening tribulations. The only thing I dreamt during this period was to become Super-Rich before I turned 30. I must have tried the strangest of ways to make money during this period. Eventually I got out of my own self inflicted torments to do saner things in life.

In between all these madness there were times when I wanted to be the next Milind Soman. Sometimes modeling was replaced by the desire to become the next Sunny Deol. And other times, it was the next Mathew Hayden. But it didn’t take me long to realize that it needed a lot more than just dreams to do all that and eventually settled down comfortably with I’m doing today.

‘Old habits die hard’ and I’m back to dreaming once again. This time it is to become a Best Selling writer. For someone who had not written anything worthwhile until ‘The Blog’ happened – it certainly is far away from realism. But then the very fact, that all of you have managed to read my Blogs and still remain sane, is no less a motivation. Whether it happens or not ‘Sharath Chandra the writer’ certainly sounds good (and I bet would look good too). Probably a few years later I would dismiss this as just another one of my unfeasible dreams. Nevertheless my Dreams would continue to remain Infinite.....

Freedom - Five Years Old

12:00 midnight isn’t exactly the time I would have expected a call from my friends. But like most people under the influence of alcohol, my friends cared two hoots for logic and decided that they needed to share their moment with me. We had all just completed five years of our professional life and it certainly was worth celebrating. Now I’m certain you are wondering how, many of us had completed five years together. That’s because around forty of us had passed out of college together and being recruited directly from campus, all of us had the same joining dates. During our days in the campus together, little would we have predicted that this is where we would be today. With our Work-Lives becoming the frontrunner among all priorities and not an iota of time available for private life, the bliss of pre-professional life is nothing short of a fantasy today. We also argued about who had done better than the other and had to mutually agree that all of us weren’t a lot different from how we had started off. Our wallets were empty then and it was no different now (most of us are actually neck deep in the quicksand called credit card debts). Most of our other classmates must have done quite well for themselves though. I’m certain that most of them would be leading a high flying life in some big corporate. In all probabilities they would also have a fast growing belly and an equally fast receding hairline to match the picture of prosperity. After all five years should certainly have made some difference in people’s physical self as well. Five years!!! The realization did give me a kick. This in spite of the fact, that the boys at the other end of the phone were the ones drinking. Without the slightest warning whatsoever, I lost control and spent the rest of the night on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

It all began on the 1st of September 1999. That was the day I first went into work attired in smart formals; a brown stripped Vivaldi neck tie and polished black shoes included. It certainly must have been one of the happiest days of my life. I had probably been dreaming of a day like this ever since I had realized the value of those crispy notes with Gandhiji’s smiling face on it. The thousands of things I wanted to do and buy after I had started earning are still vividly clear in my head. After years of waiting, the day I would start to be financially independent had finally arrived. Only to immediately realize that the ‘Financial Independence’ which I was chasing would always remain as elusive to me as an Olympic medal to an Indian athlete. However I have traveled quite a long way from that memorable Wednesday morning. If only there was a means to convert time into distance, I would have traveled nothing less than a few billion light years. My CV for the last five year is nothing short of being intriguing. Starting of as a service engineer repairing CNCs and Robots, I have done things as varied as Product Designing, Network and Direct Marketing, Project Consultancy, Telemarketing, Recruitment Consultancy, Setting up a Back Office Service.... This apart from the couple of months spent at home bearing with Mom’s constant nagging to get a job, even as I whiled time watching our Men in Blue squeezing a victory out of the invincible Aussies. I had even contemplated writing a book ‘Thousand ways to dig your own grave’. But then my cousin Nikhil had been the one who had thought of this title for his own adventures and I dared not take a risk of digging an additional grave for myself by copying his idea. I got into all these ventures because I wanted to make a lot of money and that too faster than anybody else. I also had this crazy dream of buying a Harley Davidson before my 26th birthday. My 26th Birthday just flew by and all I have is a Bullet. But then didn’t somebody say that Bullet was the Harley Davidson of Indian Roads? The last year and a half has thankfully been quite steady and I certainly hope it remains this way. But as I look back, I always convince myself to have absolutely no complaints. After all, don’t all dark clouds deserve a silver lining? When you end up burning not just fingers but the entire arm in six different business ventures, you obviously need to claim that there have been shit loads of learning. And that’s going to be my alibi. Nostalgia need not always be pleasant, Right?

Blogging??? Who Me??? Nooooo Waaaay...........

Hurray!!! It’s finally done. My first piece of written work and in a couple of minutes (assuming I finish this piece in the first place) it would get posted onto RÊVES INFINIS. Now why my blog is named the way it has been, is quite a story in itself and considering that I hope (beyond my wildest expectations) to keep writing and fill my blog with unparallel idiocy, it’s quite certain that this story also can be told one day. Now coming back to the tale at hand; the intent earlier was to name this piece ‘Why did I finally start Blogging’, but repeated attempts to get myself onto typing a few words of self presumed wisdom brought about one absolute self discovery; the fact that I have never tried doing a ‘thing’, just because a lot others were doing it. Sound confusing? No, No, let me clarify…. when we try looking at it closely, it’s not all that confusing; what it rather turns out to be is a simple case of utter stupidity!

From time immemorial (which in my case has to be 1978 or a couple of years later when I started making sense of things), I have always distanced myself as far a possible from the most popular (read fashionable) of the worldly pleasures our earthly kinfolks have invented. Without delving deeply into what happened years ago, let me list out a recent few……

The whole world went Potter crazy; The adventures of the extremely lovable witches & wizards with the amazingly dim-witted muggles became an international hit catapulting poor little Mrs. Rowling from a one bedroom studio apartment into a Scottish castle and a new husband in tow. But for good old yours truly, Harry potter was just a fad, something to indulge in for those who had absolutely nothing else to do. The fact that every single Enid Blyton in sight was gobbled up as a kid, was something that was conveniently forgotten. And then when somebody did ask the question – “How did you find the Order of the Phoenix”? The reply was quite instant – “Harry Potter…… Who me??? Noooo Waaaay”. Though I never had to explain the reason for such an answer (probably my good friend never cared about the reason), my answer quite certainly sent the message that I was not to be considered one in the same pedestal as all those million poor souls who missed a beat in their heart on learning how Mrs. & Mr. Potter were brutally killed by Lord Voldemort.

A few years earlier; everybody I knew spent all their time (and almost all their pocket money) at a place with a very droll name ‘Cyber Café’. Now only heavens know why it was so mandatory to serve tasteless coffee when hundreds of college going teenagers paid through their nose(and waited with folded hands) as websites with crudely morphed pictures of some very popular actresses (and actors) came alive on the screens of Pentium machines, in closed cubicles of these cafés. It was also quite fashionable to own a free e-mail account (mostly hotmail), as it certainly added a few points in the ‘status quotient’ of an individual. And then one dear chum dared ask the question – “Hey dude what’s your e-mail id”? The reply did not require me to bat an eyelid – “Internet… Who me???? Noooo Waaaay”. Though my dear friend probably just wanted to send me a mail with a greeting message and questions on how I was doing (how very convenient!!!, considering we stayed in the adjacent rooms at the campus hostel), my answer certainly sent the message that I was not someone who would waste time at a stuffy 3’ X 3’ cubicle helping some industrious businessman mint money.

The list could continue; Playing Computer Games…., Internet Chatting….., Watching WWF (as a kid)…….; However considering that I have already wasted quite a lot of our time and a tiny bit of space on blogspot’s server, let me leap into the latest of my adversary. Already having a cult following the world over, Blogging has certainly become a huge data source by itself. From writings on anything, everything, anybody and everybody to absolute useless personal stories (yes, yes I know this is one of them), blogsites are filled with information we could all want. The fact that it is written mostly by ordinary people definitely gives it an added personal touch. Then why do I hate Blogging? I guess it’s just because blogging has suddenly become outrageously popular. A lot of people I know started blogging (and more irritatingly talking in lengths about how much fun they were having writing their minds out) and this suddenly put me onto the “Noooo Waaaay” mode.

Then what is it that has made this amazingly coooool anti-popularity icon (well I guess that’s what I think I’m) fall prey to something that’s becoming a rage with any and every head that spends a decent amount of time on the internet?????

Trust me; I have not the faintest idea myself. That’s exactly why I had to change the title of my first ever post on a blog site. Well don’t blame me if you have been let down by the ending after being forced to expect a wonderful story on self realization and the need to change into a more intelligent being, all through these ramblings. Could it be that I have suddenly become a lot more mature, not worried about being a silly trend follower or has the world suddenly become a lot better for a normal completely sane individual like me.

Well I guess;
With all those time spent playing computer games & chatting…….
Realizing how paranoid I get if my mail box is not checked every 15 minutes…..
Frantically waiting for the next Harry Potter to come out (that too after lapping each one of the first five word by word)…….
I must have finally learnt to say the following 2 words, when asked if I was against a popular fad – “Nooooooo Waaaaaay”
